Did you immediately assume they were wrong?
…Maybe.
There is your problem.
Conviction is useful. Certainty can be dangerous.
Aren’t they basically the same thing?
No.
Conviction says, “I believe this strongly.”
Certainty says, “I cannot possibly be wrong.”
And you think I should doubt myself?
I think you should test yourself.
Find the strongest argument against your own position.
Not the ridiculous one. Not the argument you can knock down in ten seconds.
Find the version that actually makes you uncomfortable.
What if I still disagree?
Then your belief may be stronger than before.
Because now it has survived examination.
And if I change my mind?
Then you have learned something.
There is no shame in that.
Never protect a belief simply because it belongs to you. Test your strongest convictions against the strongest arguments you can find.
If your idea survives, keep it. If it does not, be grateful you discovered that before reality did it for you.
