Respect Earned · now
Let me ask you something rather dangerous.
That usually means I should be worried.
Are you addicted to being noticed?
I prefer “appreciated.”
Of course you do.
Attention feels wonderful. Especially when it comes from someone whose attention you desperately wanted.
But there is a trap.
What trap?
You begin measuring your value by how much attention you receive.
Then someone stops looking at you and suddenly you feel smaller.
That is uncomfortably accurate.
Good. Discomfort is useful when it catches you telling yourself a lie.
Someone wanting you does not prove your worth.
Someone leaving does not destroy it either.
But surely being desired matters.
Certainly.
Enjoy it.
Just do not build your identity inside somebody else’s gaze.
How do I know if I am doing that?
Notice how you behave when the attention disappears.
Do you suddenly become desperate to get it back?
Do you change yourself because you think the old version of you was not enough?
And if I do?
Step back. Let the silence exist.
You should be able to enjoy being admired without needing admiration to feel valuable.
Attention is lovely.
Self-respect is much harder to lose.
