Respect Earned · now
I have a question for you.
Go on.
Have you ever made a decision while angry and then spent the next three days trying to defend it?
…Perhaps.
Of course you have.
We all do foolish things when our emotions are holding the pen.
So I should never make decisions when emotional?
Impossible.
You are a human being. Emotions will be sitting at the table whether you invite them or not.
The trick is not removing emotion.
Give important decisions a cooling period.
How long?
Long enough that you can read your own message tomorrow without thinking, “Oh god, who allowed me to send that?”
That feels personally targeted.
It should.
When something matters, separate three things.
What happened.
What you feel about what happened.
And what you actually intend to do about it.
Why separate them?
Because your feelings can be completely real without being completely accurate.
Anger can tell you that something matters. Fear can tell you to pay attention. Neither one gets to automatically decide what you do next.
So I pause first.
Yes. Pause. Gather the facts. Sleep on it if you can. Then decide.
Never give a temporary emotion the authority to make a permanent decision.
