More than one Theory

๐Ÿ”” You chose the Multiple Killers Theory.
๐Ÿ’ญ The city keeps repeating the same name. Jack the Ripper. One man. One shadow moving through Whitechapel. But that assumption was never proven. It was simplyโ€ฆ convenient.
๐Ÿ“ž Kim to you
Iโ€™m in Mile End. A small workshop behind a row of houses. There is wood dust everywhere. Half-built staircases are leaning against the walls.
๐Ÿ“ž You
Why a workshop?
๐Ÿ“ž Kim to you
Because the man I need to speak to is a builder. And apparently he trusts wood more than people. Iโ€™m with George Lusk. Chairman of the Whitechapel Vigilance Committee. The civilians are patrolling the streets because they think the police arenโ€™t doing enough.
And heโ€™s also the man who received the from Hell letter. The one with the kidney.
๐Ÿ“ž Lusk
I told the police everything already. If youโ€™re another reporterโ€ฆ
๐Ÿ“ž Kim to you
Iโ€™m not a reporter.
๐Ÿ“ž Lusk
Then youโ€™re wasting my time.
๐Ÿ“ž Kim to you
Before you ask me to leaveโ€ฆ look at this.
๐Ÿ“ž Lusk
โ€ฆWhere did you get that?
๐Ÿ“ž Kim to you
Does it matter?
๐Ÿ“ž Lusk
It does if Iโ€™m the one being asked questions.
๐Ÿ“ž Lusk
Alright. You have my attention. Sit down.
๐Ÿ“ž Kim
Letโ€™s talk about the murders. Everyone says one man did it. Do you believe that?
๐Ÿ“ž Lusk
I believe Whitechapel is full of violent men. Drunkards. Knife carriers. Men who hate women. So no. I donโ€™t think the idea of multiple killers is impossible.
๐Ÿ“ž Kim to you
Exactly. Thatโ€™s the question.
Five women murdered in a matter of weeks. Different locations. Different circumstances.
Yet everyone insists itโ€™s one man.
๐Ÿ“ž Lusk
Because the newspapers say so.
๐Ÿ“ž Kim to you
That again.
๐Ÿ“ž Lusk
Before the papers started screaming about the Ripperโ€ฆ people called them the Whitechapel murders. Plural. Separate crimes. Now every knife in the East End belongs to the same ghost.
๐Ÿ“ž Kim
But there are similarities. The throat cuts. The timing. Night attacks.
๐Ÿ“ž Lusk
Yes. But that doesnโ€™t prove one killer. It proves the victims are easy targets. Women alone.
Who are drunk and desperate. Walking dark streets. You donโ€™t need genius to kill them. You need opportunity.
๐Ÿ“ž Kim
Thatโ€™s brutal.
๐Ÿ“ž Lusk
Itโ€™s Whitechapel.
๐Ÿ“ž Kim
But some murders areโ€ฆ different. More mutilation. More precision.
๐Ÿ“ž Lusk
Which suggests skill.
๐Ÿ“ž Kim
Or escalation.
๐Ÿ“ž Lusk
Or two different men.
๐Ÿ“ž Kim
Exactly. So. The first murder. A violent man kills a woman in Whitechapel. Second murder.
Another man. Similar victim. Similar location. The newspapers connect them. And suddenlyโ€ฆ every murder after that becomes the same killer.
๐Ÿ“ž Lusk
Itโ€™s possible. But then thereโ€™s the other problem.
๐Ÿ“ž Kim
The kidney.
๐Ÿ“ž Lusk
Yes.
When that parcel arrivedโ€ฆ I thought it was a joke. Another hoax letter.
But the doctors said it was human. Left kidney. Preserved in spirits. Same organ that was missing from the woman in Mitre Square.
๐Ÿ“ž Kim
Catherine Eddowes.
๐Ÿ“ž Lusk
Exactly.
๐Ÿ“ž Kim
So either the killer sent it. Or someone with access to medical specimens wanted to terrify you.
๐Ÿ“ž Lusk
Either wayโ€ฆ someone wanted me involved.
๐Ÿ“ž Kim
Why you?
๐Ÿ“ž Lusk
Because I lead the Vigilance Committee.
Weโ€™ve been demanding the government offer a reward. Patrolling the streets ourselves. Embarrassing the authorities. Someone wanted to scare me. Or mock me.
๐Ÿ“ž Kim
One more question.
๐Ÿ“ž Lusk
Go on.
๐Ÿ“ž Kim
If itโ€™s one killerโ€ฆ what kind of man is he?
๐Ÿ“ž Lusk
Quiet. Local. Comfortable in those streets. Someone who blends in.
๐Ÿ“ž Kim
A Whitechapel man.
๐Ÿ“ž Lusk
Most likely.
๐Ÿ“ž Kim
Not a prince. Not a nobleman.
๐Ÿ“ž Lusk
Those men donโ€™t walk in Whitechapel at three in the morning.
๐Ÿ“ž Kim
Unless they have a reason.
๐Ÿ“ž Lusk
Possible. But unlikely.
But Iโ€™ll tell you something strange.
๐Ÿ“ž Kim
What?
๐Ÿ“ž Lusk
A few nights agoโ€ฆ I thought someone was watching my house. A man with a beard. Standing across the street.
๐Ÿ“ž Kim
Watching you?
๐Ÿ“ž Lusk
When you receive half a kidney in the postโ€ฆ you start noticing shadows.
๐Ÿ“ž Kim to you
That part is real. He actually asked for police protection because he believed someone was watching him.
๐Ÿ“ž You
Kimโ€ฆ maybe you shouldโ€ฆ
๐Ÿ“ž Unknown Voice
Mr. Lusk. Open the door.
๐Ÿ“ž Lusk
You expecting someone?
๐Ÿ“ž Kim
No.
๐Ÿ“ž Unknown Voice
Mr. Lusk. We know youโ€™re inside.
๐Ÿ“ž You
Kim. Leave. Now.
๐Ÿ“ž Lusk
Back door. Go.
๐Ÿ“ž Kim to you
I’m moving.
๐Ÿ“ž Unknown Voice
Where is she?!
๐Ÿ“ž Kim to you
I’m running.
๐Ÿ“ž Call cuts out
๐Ÿ“ž Call connects again
๐Ÿ“ž Kim to you
Okay. Iโ€™m back.
๐Ÿ“ž You
Kim what happened?!
๐Ÿ“ž Kim to you
Remember that thing I gave Lusk earlier?
๐Ÿ“ž You
Yes?
๐Ÿ“ž Kim to you
Apparently the men who owned it wanted it back.
๐Ÿ“ž You
You STOLE something?!
๐Ÿ“ž Kim to you
Borrowed. Temporarily.
But I learned something important tonight. The murders might not belong to one man. Or even one motive.
Whitechapel is violent enough to produce many killers. But history prefers a single monster. So we gave them one.
๐Ÿ“ž You
What now?
๐Ÿ“ž Kim to you
Now I’m going to finish it
๐Ÿ’ญ What a weird ending. It’s certain that Kim has lost all thinking capacity and is on full survival mode at this point. You wonder when she will call again. If she calls again. She might not. That thought haunts you. What did she mean with ‘Now I’m going to finish it’? What is she going to do? You must go to Secrets Hall to communicate with Mr. Sterces.
